How Many Copies of The Harry Potter Books Have Been Sold?

Anyone who knows me, knows that I love Harry Potter (love is probably not a strong enough word). And I found myself wondering the other day, just how many copies of Harry Potter books have been sold?

Well, this question turned out to be harder to answer than I expected. It’s very difficult to establish exactly how many Harry Potter books have been sold across the world, as different websites will give you different information. According to Wikipedia, which generally is pretty reliable (okay, okay I know there are many people out there who will disute this fact - but c'mon, it's not that bad), the book series has been translated into 67 different languages, and as of June 2008, over 400 million copies had been sold.

But what does a staggering figure like 400 million mean, other than it's a lot of books. Well, let's put it this way, if you take the length of a book (say 30 centimetres) then times that by 400 million, it's 12 billion centimetres, or 120 million metres, or 75,000 miles. The circumference of the earth is only 25,000 miles, so that’s three times all the way round, and keep in mind JK Rowling would have sold a bucket load of books since 2008, and now she's even got The Casual Vacancy out! The books could probably got round the world a fourth time by now.

But you get the idea, it’s a lot of books. I wish I could write like JK, then I wouldn't be here writing articles about it; I’d be sailing my yacht around the world with Emma Watson as my deck hand!

Ah, a moose can dream.

If you are a Harry Potter nut like me, you might like some of these collectibles available from Amazon. My favourite is the incredible Harry Potter Page to Screen by Bob McCabe (I actually own this book), lots of behind the scenes info about the making of the series in a beautiful,  book with stunning photos:
